Young Indian Entrepreneur Turns Rs 30,000 Food Stall into Rs 2,000 Crore Franchise
In a remarkable entrepreneurial journey, Sagar Daryani, Co-founder & CEO of Wow! Momo, has transformed a humble Rs 30,000 food stall into a Rs 2,000 crore fast-food franchise, earning a monthly revenue of Rs 40 crore. This success story stands as a testament to India’s dynamic startup ecosystem, where innovation and persistence drive phenomenal growth.
From Kiosk to Culinary Empire Sagar Daryani and his classmate Binod Homagai launched Wow! Momo in 2008 while pursuing their Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Starting with a single table and two part-time cooks at Spencer’s in Kolkata, the duo faced family opposition and financial challenges. However, the business grew rapidly, thanks to the support of fellow St. Xavier’s alumni Shah Miftaur Rahman and Murali Krishnan, who joined the venture. Today, Homagai serves as COO, Rahman as CFO, and Krishnan as CMO of Wow! Momo.
A Recipe for Success Under Daryani’s leadership, Wow! Momo expanded rapidly and currently operates around 800 outlets across 26 states, with ambitious plans to reach 3,000 stores by the end of 2024. The company’s growth has been fueled by strategic investments, including Rs 130 crore from Tiger Global Management in 2019, Rs 3 crore from Fabindia’s William Bissell in 2018, and a recent Rs 70 crore investment from Z3 Partners in April 2024.
Innovating for the Indian Palate Wow! Momo’s success stems from its innovative menu, featuring MoBurgs—momo-filled burgers—and unique desserts like Chocolate Momos. This willingness to experiment has kept the brand ahead of the competition.
Sagar Daryani’s vision of taking Wow! Momo public through an IPO reflects his commitment to scaling the brand while delivering unique and delightful food experiences. The journey of Wow! Momo stands as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs across India, proving that passion, persistence, and innovation can turn dreams into a thriving reality.
