U.S.-based pizza chain Papa John’s International is preparing to re-enter the Indian market by October 2025, with plans to open 650 outlets nationwide by 2035.
The brand, which had earlier announced its intention to return in April 2023, will make its comeback starting with Bengaluru, adapting its menu to suit Indian preferences while retaining its signature pizzas.
Papa John’s exit from India in 2017 was attributed to operational hurdles and intense competition, but the company now sees renewed opportunity despite current challenges facing global QSR players in India. Fast-food chains are witnessing sluggish sales growth as urban consumers tighten spending amid slow wage increases and heightened competition.
A master franchisee executive confirmed that the rollout strategy is designed to position Papa John’s as a strong contender in India’s $6 billion pizza market, where rivals such as Domino’s and Pizza Hut currently dominate.
